How RAYVO's 3D Solar Design Checks Shading and Shadows, Month by Month

By Team RAYVO 7 min read

RAYVO's 3D studio checks shading by sweeping the sun across the 21st of every month in half-hour steps and testing every module against the buildings, trees, tanks and other rows around it. The loss comes out month by month, so you can see when and where a roof loses sun. This is how it works and where its limits are.

The roof is modelled, not drawn flat

Draw the roof as any outline over satellite imagery with its planes, pitch and height. Flat, gable, shed and hip roofs are supported, including L, T and U shaped outlines, with extra wings and upper storeys on the same building.

Everything that casts a shadow is on the model

  • Water tanks, a stair room, AC units, a solar water heater, dishes, vents and skylights.
  • Trees and neighbouring buildings.
  • The panel rows themselves, because one row can shade the next.

How the shading check runs

  • The sun is swept across the 21st of every month in half-hour steps.
  • At each step every module is checked against everything that could block it.
  • The shading loss is reported month by month, not as one rounded figure.

Where the sun and yield come from

A sunlight heat map for each roof is built from PVGIS climate data, with a live sun path over the house. The annual generation estimate follows from the layout you drew, so a change to the panels changes the number.

From shadows to strings

Inverter size and count, and how the modules are strung, are worked out from the module datasheet and the site's coldest morning and hottest afternoon. Wind speed comes from IS 875 (Part 3) for the nearest listed city, with design pressure at the array height.

What it does not claim

  • The output is a design-stage estimate. Real generation depends on weather, soiling, equipment and installation quality.
  • A structural engineer still designs the actual roof structure.
  • A system that does not pay back says so, instead of being made to look good.

Test it on your hardest roof

Open the studio and model one awkward roof from your own pipeline: an L-shaped terrace with a tank, a stair room and a taller neighbour to the south. Compare the month-by-month shading with what you see on site, and with any other tool you are considering.
